TROPICAL UPDATE (05/08/08)

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Dense Fog Advisory Until 9AM for Portions of Inland Northeast Florida and Much of Central Florida...Dense Smoke Advisory until 9AM for Glades and Henry Counties...Warm and Dry Statewide Today...Low Humidity Will Raise the Threat For Wildfires Across Inland Portions of Florida Today...A Moderate Risk of Rip Currents Expected at East Central Florida and West Panhandle Beaches This Afternoon...Widespread Fog Possible Late Tonight...

Updated 7:15 AM EDT Wednesday

Mild overnight lows and onshore winds have increased moisture over parts of the state with low clouds and fog forming over inland areas of Northeast Florida and parts of Central and South Florida. Dense fog, especially when combined with smoke from recent wildfires, will result in poor visibilities for driving this morning and a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9am EDT for Levy, Citrus, Sumter, Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough and Polk Counties in West Central Florida; Hamilton, Suwannee, Columbia, Baker, Union, Bradford, Gilchrist, Alachua and Marion Counties in Northeast Florida; Inland Volusia, Lake, Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Indian River Counties in East Central Florida; and Okeechobee, St. Lucie, Martin and inland Palm Beach Counties in Southeast Florida. A Dense Smoke Advisory is also in effect until 9am EDT for Glades and Hendry Counties in South Florida. Florida Highway Patrol is prompting lane closures due to this fog over portions of the Beachline Expressway in Orlando as well as portions of the Turnpike and I-95. Drivers are urged to use caution when driving. The fog will begin to lift as few hours after sunrise with improving conditions.

The dry and mild weather conditions will continue today and tonight as high pressure off the Southeast U.S. coast continues to extend across Florida. The result will be another day of mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and rain-free conditions statewide. Temperatures will remain on the warm side statewide with afternoon highs ranging from the upper 80s and low 90s inland to the low and mid 80s along the immediate coast. Winds will pick up out of the east-southeast between 5 and 15mph this afternoon across the Peninsula with south winds of 5-15mph across the Florida Panhandle. A sea breeze will also develop along both the east and gulf coast this afternoon.

Warm temperatures and dry conditions will again enhance the spread of any existing or new wildfires today. Although moderate onshore winds will begin to bring in increasing moisture, the airmass over the state will still be dry enough to see humidity values fall below critical values, especially over inland areas this afternoon. As a result, Red Flag Warnings are in effect through early this evening many inland areas in the Florida Panhandle as well as inland areas across the Florida Peninsula.

Winds will decrease tonight and shift south statewide. This will result in another mild night with overnight lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s across North Florida and upper 60s and low 70s across Central and South Florida. Also, warm temperatures and increasing moisture may result in another night of patchy to dense fog over inland areas of the state.

Onshore east winds along the East Coast combined with small ocean swells will result in a moderate risk of rip currents along East Central Florida beaches today. A moderate onshore southeast wind flow will result in a moderate risk of rip currents along western Panhandle beaches today.
